The “Grasshopper” by George B. Grant from 1871

This week we are presenting G.B. Grant's second calculating machine, of which he built several specimens. It was created almost 20 years after the Centennial machine, which we showed you last week, and is Grant's most mature design.

Its very unusual design and the outstanding tens carry are striking.
This video of the original machine from the IBM collection, which is on permanent loan to the Arithmeum, was created by the two computer science students Evelyn Lippmann and Tim Vellmer as part of the lecture series on the history of machine computing with Professor Dr. Ina Prinz. The recordings were made on the machine, which has not yet been restored, so we apologize for any difficulties you may have in operating it. The “Grasshopper” machine will also be restored next year as part of the restoration project for all machines in the IBM collection. Enjoy this video!
