This catalog chapter is dedicated to the American artist Leon Polk Smith (1906-1996), whose Chickasaw roots shaped his turn to geometric-constructivist art. After early experiments with Mondrian's Neo-Plasticism, he developed an unmistakable style in which organic lines meet in sharply defined areas of color.
From tondos to “torn-drawings” and multi-part “Constellations”, it is clear how Smith consistently reduced his pictorial ideas and thus became a co-founder of hard-edge painting.
His works combine emotional impact with clear compositional principles and refer to a universal harmony in which opposites always complement each other.
