Brunsviga 1

Four-species pinwheel machine

1892

The first German pinwheel machine was built by Braunschweiger Nähmaschinen-Fabrik Grimme, Natalis & Co. in 1892, shortly after the purchase of the license for the Odhner patents in the German-speaking countries. This machine is one of the first exemplars and is almost completely identical to the Odhner Model 1. The circular seal from Grimme, Natalis & Co. is in the same place as the Odhner seal on the Odhner Model 1. This machine, which cost 150 M in 1892, was produced for only one year. Brunsviga relatively quickly developed its own improvements, e.g. the extension of the crank. Today only a few specimens of this first Brunsviga model are known worldwide, one of them in the Science Museum London (no. 262), two in the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum (no. 407 and 633) and the two specimens (no. 285 and 308) in the Bonn collection. These machines do not yet have any safety devices to prevent operating errors and - particularly serious - the tens transmission in the result mechanism only goes up to the 10th digit.
