Burroughs Moon-Hopkins M 200 (demonstration model)
Demonstration model of the invoicing machine with multiplication body
ca. 1953
This is a demonstration model of a Burroughs Moon-Hopkins Model M 200. Its case and many parts of the mechanism were removed to reveal the complex workings of the machine. To do this, a hand crank was built onto the main shaft. The center of the machine is a sub-stroke Remington machine, built as the Remington Model 7 typewriter from 1894 to 1914. The version installed here, however, has only one letter character set, the capital letters, and in addition, other special characters selectable by switching. In front of the typewriter keyboard, there are the function keys on the left, in the middle with a white background the numeric keypad for entering summands and multiplicands, to the right a second numeric keypad for the multiplicands, in front the large keys for carriage movement and paper transport. The rear part of the machine contains the calculating mechanism, especially the multiplication block, and on top the printing unit. The main patent - referred to in earlier patents - was filed in 1906, but was not granted until 1920. Many other patents - most by Hubert Hopkins, some also by his brother William Wallace Hopkins, also filed around 1906/07 - were granted between 1912 and 1921.
