Locke Adder

Adder (number slider) (ca. 1905)

This rare American tin-bar adder with finger adjustment was designed and manufactured by Clarence E. Locke, Mfg. Co, Kensett, Iowa, USA. Four cartouches in Art Nouveau decoration are stamped on the copper frame. In this form, the Locke Adder was hardly common in Europe, but it is related to the "universal calculator" Omega by Justin Bamberger. Both devices were probably more decorative prestige objects for the desk than useful calculating aids. The operator must perform the tens transfer mentally and manually.
