Adix 1

Single row ratchet machine (from 1903)

This machine is primarily intended for adding up entries in account books column by column. With the nine-digit keypad, only single-digit numbers, e.g. only the ones of several numbers standing one below the other, can be added up to the maximum three-digit sum; it is therefore also called a "single row adding machine". The switching ratchet acts only on the single wheel of the three-digit result mechanism. The machine is probably an early example; the deletion of the summing mechanism must still be done in a cumbersome way. It does not have the additional ten-digit bracket, which can be used to increase the ten-digit wheel of the display by one unit, as present in another specimen of the collection (FDM 7740). The small and lightweight device (about 200 g) is in a flat padded case.

The Adix was built from 1903 by the company Adolf Bordt in Mannheim, inventor is Josef Pallweber. In the 1920/30s and also after World War II, an improved version with a Bakelite case appeared on the market, sold under different names.

The model names to distinguish the variants were introduced only in 2009 by Georg Smolorz.
