Using Napier’s Rods
This children's program is mainly concerned with multiplication. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Scotsman John Napier invented multiplication rods as a multiplication aid. The product of large numbers can be easily read off by cleverly placing the rods together. After the principle has been explained, each child is given these rods to calculate with.
Finally, two calculating machines are presented: one by Wilhelm Schickard, which uses the Napier rods as a multiplication aid, and the other by Otto Steiger, a direct multiplication machine with a unique unit. The advantage of successful mechanization of a calculation process is easy to understand with these calculating machines. At the same time, the fascinating technology of the machines is explained.
