Chip Art + Artistic Chip

Computer Chip and Chip Design

This summer the children’s programme in the Arithmeum will deal with topics connected with the main exhibition „Aesthetics of Chip Design„. The individual themes will be „What are microprocessors?„, „What is chip design all about?„, and „How does a computer work?„. Although these themes depend to some extent on one another, they can without problem be booked individually. For children aged 8 or above, prior registration necessary, fee EUR 6,00.

A computer chip consists of many millions of tiny building blocks. Placing them and wiring them up is done by computer programmes which produce large pictures of the chip design. These remind one of a rectangular street plan or even of a constructivist work of art. We will learn how a chip is produced and will look deeply into its structure with a polarization microscope. We will even have a chance to place the elements of a microprocessor ourselves and build our own „chips„.
