Goldschmidt
Four-species pinwheel machine
ca. 1900
The four-species pinwheel machine known as Goldschmidt was most likely created by J. Goldschmidt in Paris. The following four-line inscription can be found on the bottom board on the right: Constructeur/ J. GOLDSCHMIDT/ 12 RUE DE CHABROL/ PARIS. Martin cannot give any further details about the manufacturer, there is no evidence for his reference to a stepped drum machine. Latest findings indicate that Goldschmidt purchased Brunsviga machines and sold them under his own name. The correspondence with Brunsviga Model B is given (FDM 7123, 7300, 8953). However, there is also great similarity with the machines built by Chateau Freres in the early 20th century. The specimen has no locking devices yet, the tens in the result movement only go up to the tenth digit. The revolution counter has no tens transmission. The machine was built around 1900. Several copies of the Goldschmidt have become known in the meantime, see for example rechenmaschinen-illustrated.com.
