„The Newberry Singers“

...were founded in Philadelphia in 1954 by the Gospel singer and pianist Edwin Newberry. Their unique style of singing as well as their excellent stage presence very quickly opened all doors for them to the world of Gospels and Spirituals. They toured with such famous artists as Mahalia Jackson, the „Ward Singers“ and Mary Johnson Davis. In the course of time many Gospel singers modernized their style, but not so the Newberry Singers, who adhered to the traditional Gospel sound. A newspaper opinion: „‘The Newberry Singers’ fully do justice to their reputation as one of the world’s leading ensembles specializing in classical Negro spirituals and Gospel music.“
