Proportion and Harmony

Free public guided tour every Sunday at 3 pm (in German)

The human eye is very sensitive to proportions. We may not realise it, but the quick perception of proportions often plays a role in our everyday decision-making. Even a small child can easily tell whether something is bigger or smaller. However, proportions can also be much more diverse. Mathematicians have always been interested in proportions. They have found ways to calculate with the help of proportions, as we can see in the exhibition "Sectors and precious mathematical and drawing instruments from the 17th and 18th centuries", which is being shown at the same time in the Arithmeum. However, mathematicians also set out in search of particularly beautiful proportions that correspond to the human idea of harmony. For example, they have intensively investigated the proportions of the golden ratio. This can also be found in nature. Artists also came across it very early on and studied it intensively. However, they also experimented with many other proportions, always in search of a particular harmony. In geometric-constructivist art, this search is pursued in its purest form. We can follow the proportions in elementary geometric forms and trace their harmony, but also their optical tensions. The exhibition "Proportion and Harmony" allows us to experience this search through a selection of works from the Arithmeum's art collection.
