The Arithmeum was able to acquire this calculating machine with the support of the Kulturstiftung der Länder, the University of Bonn, the Alfried Krupp-von-Bohlen-und-Halbach-Stiftung and the Federal Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs.
With this machine, Johann Christoph Schuster built the last artifact of mechanical arithmetic. This unique piece is on display in the Arithmeum collection.
The special stamp was issued as part of the “Kulturstiftung der Länder” series, the main aspects of which are the recovery of previously lost works of art on the one hand and the safeguarding of important masterpieces on the other. The motif selected for 2002 is representative of these two aspects.
