Commemorative Stamp

Commemorative Stamp Issue depicting the Mechanical Calculating Machine of Johann Christoph Schuster (1759-1823)

The Arithmeum was able to acquire this machine with the support of the Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States, the Alfried-Krupp-von-Bohlen-und Halbach Foundation, and the Federal Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs.

It was invented and constructed by Johann Christoph Schuster and was the last artefact of the art of mechanical calculating. It is a unique piece and can be admired in the Arithmeum Collection.

The commemorative stamp is one of a series entitled „Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States„, whose main aspects are the recovery of lost works of art on the one hand, and the protection of outstanding masterpieces on the other. The motif chosen for 2002 represents both these standpoints well.
