Both in Tito Gonnella’s manuscripts and in the “Monitore Toscano“ of 10. February 1859 mention is made of a mechanical calculating machine built by Niccola Guinigi. Until 2010 is was considered to be lost. But then, 150 years after Niccola Guinigi demonstrated it to the Academy of Arts and Artifacts, it was discovered in the antique collection of Subert.

The machine is an arithmetic manipulator which Guinigi designed, as he himself wrote, in order to “[...] do addition in such a way that the operations are like an easy game for everyone, as one needs to do neither a calculation nor a tens-carry step and can always count on the result.”

It performs a calculation place for place, beginning with the least.
